Centrifugal Elevators
Centrifugal elevators operate at high speeds & use centrifugal motion to “throw” material out of the buckets as they come around the head pulley or sprocket. The speed of the elevator is critical for proper bucket discharge with centrifugal elevators. If the belt/chain speed is too slow or too fast the buckets may not properly discharge which can result in “downlegging.” This is when material does not exit the discharge chute & falls back to the boot on the downward side of the elevator.
Due to the higher speeds there is more spillage at the inlet with this style of elevator. To compensate for the added spillage centrifugal elevators use “digger” buckets every 10th bucket space. These buckets have a slightly more pronounced lip that allows them to scoop spilled material from the boot housing. The digger buckets are typically made of a steel & include a wear resistant lip.
Centrifugal elevators can be used to move “lighter” abrasive materials. Due to the high speed “throwing” action in this style elevator, abrasion resistant liners can be added to the head, hood, & discharge area to handle the added wear.
